Educating/Training

I qualified as a teacher of Physical Education and Drama in 1969 and worked in schools until 1974. Since then, as part of all my employment, I have undertaken teaching activities of some sort every year, indeed most weeks! Latterly, I have had the privilege to work with students at both Nottingham and Nottingham Trent Universities. Of recent years I have also taught members of the Nottingham Playhouse Youth Theatre on a regular basis.

As a practicing director, arts administrator and manager I have a breadth of experience.

The work at both local universities as formal lecturer and as seminar leader has been both fascinating and rewarding. During the last four years I have been particularly pleased to have been given the opportunity to shape the Playhouse Prize with theatre design students at NTU. Using the template of the Playhouse stage we have envisioned the design and production of four different plays. Each year at the end of the process one student is identified as winner of the prize and they are then offered their first professional contract to design a Roundabout production for touring to schools.

Text study, the process of building a character, the business of theatre, communication skills, public speaking and team – building are all the subjects of workshop programmes that I am able to offer.
